xS+S Linux On Laptops Information

General Information

Linux is running quite fine on a variety of laptops. However, it can be quite tricky to get Linux up and running on these machines if you don't have all the information necessary for setting it up on a specific brand of notebooks. The Linux On Laptop Homepage tries to assist users of mobile computers in installing Linux by providing detailed information on how to get Linux up and running for a variety of machines.

Linux On Laptops --- Useful Links

The Linux on Laptops Homepage

This link is an excellent place to start a search for information on whether Linux supports a certain notebook. It also contains a lot of links related to general Linux and mobile computing issues.

Linux PCMCIA Card Services

The Linux PCMCIA Card Services package supports a number of PCMCIA and CardBus controllers. It comes with drivers for many widely used PCMCIA adapters.

Mobile Update Daemon

The mobile update daemon is a drop-in replacement for the standard Linux "update" daemon. The standard version of "update" never delays writes to the harddisk longer than 30 seconds. This policy minimizes the amount of data lost in the case of a power failure or a system crash. However, this is contrary to the intention to save power on a laptop by turning off the harddisk after it has been idle for some time: If many small writes take place this policy renders the power saving attempts useless. So the mobile update daemon delays writes to disk until a pending read in encountered thus reducing the number of disk-spinups.

Of course this behaviour has the potential danger of loosing more data in the (unlikely) case of a crash. So use this package at your own risk.

Model-Specific Configuration Information

xS+S is providing information for the following brands of laptops:
